Question

Is any group using any means other than tapes or CDs for distribution?

We are thinking that we may need to move from sending out tapes each week but did not want to send CDs to the VIPs. We would like to know if there are any other options available to us.

We are not, although we have offered our listeners the choice of memory sticks. There were no takers, which is perhaps as well, as for a TN to supply these would involve a fairly substantial initial outlay. Basically, if you record digitally, you may offer an output in a variety of digital ways. CD's are not a final answer, but they perhaps provide the simplest solution currently available.

I'm surprised no other group has come back to you on this before Peter. Many TNs are using the internet to distribute their publications. At Playback for example we put both the Playback magazine and ABC Audio News on the web each month. (www.play-back.org.uk) We get approximately 1,200 listeners taking our publications in this form. In May we started Pod-Casting these publications. This has had quite a good uptake though it has tended to be by those Visually Impaired people who like a techy challenge. From our viewpoint though it's very easy to produce. There was a TN who were thinking about giving their listeners MP3 players which they would send out to them in their wallets. I've not heard any more on how this has gone or if they could find an MP3 player which wasn't too fiddly to use. Whatever you decide to do will probably not satisfy all your listeners but as long as they have a choice they should be able to find something which suits them best.

We are just starting to record digitally, using Adobe Audition. In the meantime, we will continue to send out tapes but are keen to move onto a digital format for ease and better sound quality. We have looked at, and discounted, CDs and MP3 players and are now considering memory sticks along with Goodmans speakers which we would supply to listeners. Our sample player + stick cost £23 so this should not be too expensive with bulk discounts.
